Gender Based Violence (GBV) in all its forms, remains a critical human rights, public health and economic concern with severe, long term negative impacts on the social, physical, reproductive and mental well-being of victims and survivors, families and communities. In Uganda, GBV occurs to both women and men though it excessively affects women and girls.  According to UDHS 2016, 56% of Ugandan women have experienced physical violence and more than 1 in 5 women aged 15-49 years (22%) report that they have experienced sexual violence at some point committed by an intimate partner compared to the 8% men. Incidences of GBV like domestic violence, Female Genital Mutilation, child marriage and sexual violence are primarily based on cultural norms that assign different roles, social norms and values to men and women in ways that perpetuate male dominance and female subordination leading to unequal power relations in families and communities.

World Population Prospects (2017 Revision) by United Nations show that 48.47% of Uganda’s population is between the age of 0 – 14 years, 28.34% between 25 – 64 years, 21.16% between 15 – 24 years and just 2.04% is 65 years and above. This unveils the fact that Uganda is highly comprised of young people. To broaden their skills for personal and career development, young people need mentors because mentoring can bring a long term impact that offer life-career-changing benefits to mentees and mentors.

Debating is fun, it is a great learning tool and way of airing different points of view! Debating also helps participants to develop public speaking skills, get a deeper understanding of global contemporary issues and improve their research skills.

Consquently, in February, 2019, over 56 (25 female and 31 male) students from seven (7) Universities in the central region including; Uganda Christian University, Makerere University, Kyambogo University, Makerere University Business School, Islamic University in Uganda, Nkumba University and Kampala International University participated in regional and national debate competitions

“My name is Sophia Otobi. I am 63 years old and I am a widow with 8 children. I am a resident of Baraboce Cell Atopi parish Apac sub-county in Apac District where I am secretary of Adyeri village savings and loan association (VSLA) group. Adyeri VSLA group is among the eight (8) women’s groups in Apac that was mentored and supported in modern VSLA methodology by ACFODE. Our group was formed in 2014 with 25 women as a farming group, however, the method of savings was very rudimentary as there was no record keeping, no minimum and maximum savings, plus, the group did not have the constitution to guide us in the operation of our business.

RECENT BLOG POSTS

As an internee, I would say my experience at ACFODE was life changing because a lot of things that I didn’t know concerning gender and work ethics were lessons I learnt and this was a very positive impact to me. First of all, the working environment was generally interesting because of the new things I was getting to learn. On my first day, I was oriented by the Executive Director, I wasn’t the only intern so there was no way I would be bored in my free time and the staff members were also nice people.

 

During my stay at ACFODE between 5th June to 31st July, I was placed under the Gender and Economic Policy Department under the supervision of Ms. Rukondo Rebecca. In this department I had regular assignments to do which needed me to read books and do research on the internet to get the relevant information that would answer the questions asked. I also happened to attend a workshop. Here I was able to learn communication skills i.e. ways of addressing myself as I observed how the participants where bringing out their issues to be discussed, the value of group/team work because during some of the sessions at the work shop we were placed under different groups to discuss and this improved on the topic being discussed.

June- August is this time of the year where University students look for internship places in various Organizations. This intends to give students an advantage of working experience by the end of their undergraduate programe. As a Communication student, I got an opportunity to intern with Action for Development Organization which I got to know through a relative.

 On 5th June I introduced myself to the organization, where I found other Interns from different Universities. On arrival we were oriented by the Executive Director, who gave us all the necessary information about the organization, took us around to different offices and introduced us to the staff members, and later we were given the code of conduct to sign, since it was the norm to the people who joined the organization. On the following day, I met with my Field Supervisor, whom we had a long conversation about my expectations of the organization, and what I wanted to do.
